Current Research Initiatives

Pierce Boyne PT, DPT, NCS
Dr. Boyne’s research agenda is to improve the standard of care in neurologic rehabilitation. His focus is on addressing the problem of aerobic deconditioning after stroke, which is a major barrier to progress in stroke rehabilitation that is also related to other important issues like motor recovery, quality of life and secondary cardiovascular prevention.

Dan Carl, PhD
Dr. Carl's current research involves looking at High Intensity Interval training in both a clinical and performance based setting. He is currently looking at the role HIT can play in clinical populations such as stroke and diabetes. In addition Professor Carl enjoys research within the sport of swimming.

Chalee Engelhard, PT, EdD, MBA, GCS
Dr. Chalee Engelhard is currently engaged in research relating to physical therapy clinical education. Her research agenda includes studying how online instructional design and clinical education may affect student outcomes. She is also examining the effect of just-in-time education on translation of clinical faculty best practices into the clinic, clinical education models as well as clinical prediction models with linking DPT admissions standards to licensure pass rates.

Rose Smith, DPT, MEd, ATC, SCS, PT
Dr. Smith's current reserach interest is in the usage of musculoskeletal ultrasound in the clinical setting. She also has ongoing research in determining the predictors of injury in college level dancers.

Nancy Talbott, PhD, MS, PT
Dr. Talbott’s primary area of research is the function of the shoulder complex. Utilizing electromyography, two and three dimensional motion analysis, dynamometry and ultrasound imaging, she is investigating normal and abnormal patterns of muscle activation emphasizing the role of the scapular muscles. In addition, she is researching the articular movements that occur with common physical therapy testing and treatment.  Her goal is to utilize the recognition of normal muscle contraction and joint biomechanics to more effectively facilitate the prevention and treatment of shoulder dysfunction.

Dexter Witt, PT, DPT, DHS, OCS, FAAOMPT, CSCS
Professor Witt's current research primarily utilizes musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging to investigate physical therapy assessments and procedures of  the shoulder and upper quarter. In addition he is exploring the potential of musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging to enhance physical therapy practice.
