            * Prerequisites for application into Coordinated Program.

COORDINATED PROGRAM Students apply in Spring Quarter prior to the start of the fall class.  Application due date will be announced annually.  A limited number of positions are available.  Appointment is competitive.  For details regarding the application process, see the Coordinated Program Director or check the website.  Students must have no more than 54 hours of didactic courses left to complete at the time they enter the program.  They must complete their remaining didactic requirements during Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters of their first year in the Coordinated Program. Six credit hours of Supervised Practice will be completed in the summer quarter of the first year of the CP.  Students must be full time (registered for 15 credit hours per quarter) while enrolled in the Fall, Winter and Spring Quarters during the second year of the CP.

Students should consult Learning Opportunities for availability of courses and the quarter(s) they are offered and any pre-requisites (on-line version includes course descriptions).  They are subject to change.  See reverse side for information about Portfolio requirement and electives.

* Alternate Course – 15 –MATH-147 Elementary Problems and Statistics (3 credits)              ** Alternative Course – 28-BIOL-281 Microbiology (5 credits)

The Coordinated Program in Dietetics (CP) is a 2 year intensive program, typically completed during junior and senior year, plus one summer term.  It combines the academic requirements and the supervised practice experience needed to take the national registration examination to become a registered dietitian.  The supervised practice experiences are the equivalent of full time work in various practice settings (students are not paid).  Interested students are encouraged to read the CP Student Handbook.

Students who do not receive a position in the Coordinated Program can transfer to the Food and Nutrition major and complete the Didactic Program in Dietetics.  They will then be eligible to complete a dietetic internship upon completing their BS degree.

PORTFOLIO CAPSTONE REQUIREMENT

Completing the portfolio assignment meets requirements for both General Education (Capstone Experience) and the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education. Details are provided during the Explore Dietetics and Nutrition course, on the program website, or by the faculty advisor/Coordinated Program Director.

ELECTIVES

Three types of electives appear in the sample schedule:  General Education Electives, Management Electives, and Professional Elective.

Because there are limited opportunities to schedule electives, and because of potential scheduling conflicts, students are encouraged to identify early which electives they may be interested in and when they are offered.

Some suggested electives follow.  Consult Learning Opportunities for quarters offered and prerequisites.

General Education Electives – For a complete description of the University of Cincinnati General Education Requirements, visit the website: www.uc.edu/gened

The Dietetics curriculum meets the majority of the General Education Requirements.  To complete their Breadth of Knowledge Requirements, students must select 2 courses, one each from 2 of the following three areas:  Historical Perspective, Fine Arts, or Literature.

Professional Elective – Students have the opportunity to select a course that is both related to dietetics knowledge and skill requirements and tailored to their own interests, strengths, or areas of weakness.  General categories include:  Communications (writing, speaking, listening, information technology), Physical and Biological Sciences, Social Sciences, Research, Food, Nutrition, Management, and Health Care Systems.
