NUTRITION, MASTER OF SCIENCE

The goal of the Master of Science in Nutrition is to prepare graduates to make significant contributions tot he field in professional research, practice, teaching, and leadership. To fulfill this goal, the program provides students with: 1) a comprehensive knowledge in the biochemical and physiological aspects of human nutrition; 2) knowledge of methodologies used in basic nutrition research and nutrition intervention; 3) and skills in research, design, implementation, evaluation and interpretation.

The Master of Science in Nutrition is designed for the dietitian, nurse, physician or other health professional seeking to enhance knowledge and credentials. The program is also open to students who have completed a baccalaureate degree in Nutrition or other disciplines and wish to earn credentials to practice nutrition and/or wish to gain further knowledge in nutrition. Students may use the degree toward further graduate work at the doctorate level.

Admission Requirements

Prerequisites for admission are: 1) a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; 2) a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 at the undergraduate level based on a 4.0 scale; 3) a preferred Graduate Record Exam score of 500 in each of the following two areas, Quantitative and Verbal, taken within the seven-year period preceding admission. The GRE Writing Assessment is also required, with an estimated score of 4 or greater. 4) It is preferred but not required that the applicant have completed  the following course work with a minimum grade of B: an introductory nutrition course, one year of general chemistry with lab, one year of anatomy and physiology with lab, and one year of organic/biochemistry with lab.

Degree Requirements/Curriculum

The minimum requirement for the master's degree is one academic year of full-time graduate study equivalent to 48 graduate credit hours. The student must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 for all courses taken after entering the graduate program. All students are required to complete a thesis. Course requirements include core courses and guided electives.
