Department of Rehabilitation Sciences

Welcome Message

Welcome to the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences’ website. Thank you for your interest in our programs, we trust that you will find them worth considering.  The department offers both graduate and undergraduate programming in Health Sciences (BSHS) and Physical Therapy (DPT).

The mission of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences is to prepare allied health science students to provide high quality service in their respective fields. In collaboration with community-based partners, our students acquire professional skills infused with critical thinking, effective communication, teamwork, cultural competence and service learning.  The Department Faculty values teaching, research, service, and leadership.

The department is part of the College of Allied Health Sciences which has the distinct advantage of being part of the Academic Health Center within our large research intensive university. Our department faculty promote excellence in teaching with a student-centered approach both in and out of the classroom. Since both our graduate and undergraduate programs are very focused toward experiential/hands-on learning we are committed to maintaining a small faculty to student ratio in our laboratory courses (HLSC BS program – 1:18, DPT graduate program – 1:12). Additionally, the faculty members in both programs are involved in various research projects and initiatives, and the students in our undergraduate and graduate programs are in involved in research activities as part of their capstone experience in their respective program.

Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences

Dr. Thomas Herrmann, Program Director herrmatj@ucmail.uc.edu

The Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree offers a track in Physiologic Sciences and Exercise & Movement Science. Both tracks in our BSHS program are geared to prepare students who are choosing to pursue graduate studies. Our Physiologic Science track serves as a pre-professional curriculum for students who are interested in pursuing medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, optometry, etc. The Exercise & Movement Science track is commonly pursued by students who have interest in attending graduate programs in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Prosthetics & Orthotics, Nursing and other applied health and science disciplines.

Doctor of Physical Therapy

Dr. Lizanne Mulligan, Program Director mulligea@ucmail.uc.edu

The Doctor of Physical Therapy program is a three year post-baccalaureate curriculum that is geared to prepare students for entry-level physical therapy practice and licensure. The program currently accepts approximately 30 students in each academic year. Since the Doctor of Physical Therapy degree is a clinical doctorate geared to prepare practicing clinicians, the students participate in 39 full-time weeks of clinical internship/practicum as part of their formal training in the program.

UC DPT graduates have a 100% ultimate pass rate on the National Physical Therapy Exam, and a first time pass rate of 97% (3 year average). The national first time pass rate average is 88%. Graduates from our program are highly sought employees and many have multiple job offers prior to graduation.

As you peruse our website, I hope you will get a true sense for how our programs are structured and operate as well as the services we offer our students.  We are proud of our excellent faculty and our current students and alumni’s accomplishments and hope that you will consider joining us. Please contact me, our program directors, and/or our administrative staff (rehabsci@ucmail.uc.edu) if we may answer additional questions or arrange a tour of our facilities.
