PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION IN
AUDIOLOGY AND SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY

The graduate programs in speech-language pathology and audiology are accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. Both programs involve in-depth study of the various disorders of communication coupled with practicum experience in the areas of study.  Upon completion of the program, all graduates are eligible for the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence and licensing in the State of Ohio in the area of their major, Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology.  Students may complete education courses for State of Ohio Public School Certification.

In addition, master's students complete a thesis or publishable paper to gain experience and skill in developing evidence-based practice.

Speech-Language Pathology, Master of Arts

Speech-language pathology students at the Master of Arts level are expected to acquire those skills which would enable them to identify and manage a full range of speech/language and hearing disorders. Students are required to complete course work in the areas of neurogenic speech and language disorders, voice and craniofacial disorders, fluency disorders, language and literacy problems in children, hearing problems of children and adults.

In order to provide the master's level student with adequate advanced didactic and practicum experience with persons manifesting communication disorders, two years of study is necessary, including at least one summer term. Students who do not possess a well-rounded undergraduate major in speech and hearing, or those who come from other fields, will find it necessary to complete undergraduate requirements prior to entering the program.

Audiology, Doctor of Audiology

Students who elect to major in audiology complete course work in psychoacoustics, hearing evaluation, hearing aids, habilitative audiology, and speech and language disorders in order to prepare them to evaluate hearing disorders and provide appropriate management.

In order to provide the doctoral level student with adequate advanced didactic and practicum experience with persons manifesting hearing disorders, four years of study is necessary, including summer terms. Students who do not possess a well-rounded undergraduate major in speech and hearing, or those who come from other fields, will find it necessary to complete undergraduate requirements prior to entering the program.
