AUDIOLOGY/SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY/SPEECH, LANGUAGE,
HEARING SCIENCE, DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

The doctoral program in communication sciences and disorders prepares students for leadership in research, teaching and/or clinical areas in speech language pathology, audiology and speech and hearing science. This level of study emphasizes research techniques in speech and hearing science, experience in college teaching and the opportunity to explore the theoretical aspects of clinical techniques. Doctoral students are expected to complete course work in the major area and two minor areas and to demonstrate research competency. Students must also demonstrate, through a dissertation, contribution to knowledge in the areas of speech and hearing science, speech language pathology or audiology.

Admission Requirements

Students must meet the following admissions requirements:

  1. Online application to the Graduate School at www.grad.uc.edu. A non-refundable application fee payable to the University of Cincinnati must accompany the application.

     
  2. Graduate Record Examination score of 500 or better for each of the verbal and quantitative sections and a 4.5 or above for the written/analytical section. The student is to request that GRE results be sent directly to the University of Cincinnati (The University of Cincinnati GRE university code is 1833, department code for Speech-Language Pathology is 0620, department code for Audiology is 0602). GRE results are sent to the University via computer download tape and individual departments access these results via an internal computer program. If GRE results are older than 5 years, the student must supply the Admissions Committee with an original paper copy.

     
  3. Typed 1-2 page narrative goals statement/essay of academic and professional objectives for advanced study (please type name in upper right-hand corner of goals statement).  Send directly to the Graduate Admissions Committee, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, University of Cincinnati, 3202 Eden Ave., Room G65 French East Building, Cincinnati, OH 45267-0379.
     
  4. A resume showing previous work experience, outside activities, scholarships and honors, etc.  Send directly to the Graduate Admissions Committee, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, University of Cincinnati, 3202 Eden Ave., Room G65 French East Building, Cincinnati, OH 45267-0379.

     
  5. A 3.0 minimum overall undergraduate grade point average. ONE original official transcript is required FROM EACH UNIVERSITY ATTENDED REGARDLESS OF DURATION OR NUMBER OF CREDITS/COURSES TAKEN.  It is strongly suggested that the student request transcripts be sent with fall semester grades posted.   6. Three letters of recommendation relative to prospective students academic promise at the doctoral level. Send directly to Graduate Admissions Committee, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, University of Cincinnati, 3202 Eden Ave., Room G65 French East Building, Cincinnati, OH 45267-0379. These letters should be on university or business letterhead and may be sent individually or as a packet, mailed or faxed (fax number 513-55-0618).  No forms from the University of Cincinnati or the department are supplied or required for letters of recommendation.

     
  7. One official final transcript(s) with bachelor's and/or additional degree(s) posted is/are required upon completion of the degree program(s).

     
  8. Provide a copy of the master's thesis or evidence of other original research. Students who enter the doctoral program without such research experience will be required to conduct a research project prior to completion of course work at the University of Cincinnati.

     

Application files for fall quarter admission must be completed with the above requirements for an early (preferred) decision by January 5 or a late deadline of March 15 . Minority applicants are encouraged to complete their files by January 5 for Yates competition reviews. The initial application review process by the Department Graduate Admissions Committee takes approximately three weeks after completion of the doctoral application file. Applicants will receive written notice as application materials are received and when the application file is complete and ready for review. Admission decisions are made in writing.

 

Degree Requirements

1. 135 quarter hours past the bachelor's must be taken.
2. A minimum of 45 quarter credits must be taken in the major area exclusive of practicum experience, thesis or dissertation. At least 18 of these credits must be completed at the University of Cincinnati.
3. A minimum of 18 quarter credits in two coordinated areas of study outside of Speech/Language Pathology and Audiology must be planned as minor areas of concentration. At least one minor area must be outside the Department.
4. A minimum of 18 quarter credits in research, research design, and statistics must be taken with no credits allowed for MA thesis research.
5. Students must take at least one graduate-level course in speech and hearing science.
6. A minimum of 18 credits of Doctoral Seminar in Communication Disorders are required. No other course may be substituted. The following lists the courses:

7. Students who have not completed a master's thesis research project must complete an equivalent investigation and submit the final document to the Director of Graduate Studies prior to taking the comprehensive examination.
8. Prior to graduation, students are required to:
  1. Submit for publication one research project completed during the doctoral program;
  2. give at least on presentation at a state or national convention (a professional workshop on a scholarly topic may be substituted for the convention presentation);
  3. apply for a Summer Research Fellowship at least once during the doctoral program.
 9. Up to 45 quarter credits at the graduate level may be transferred from another institution upon approval of the academic committee. The student will furnish catalogue copies of course descriptions and/or letters from appropriate faculty at the other institutions for all courses to be considered for transfer. The academic advisor will share these with the appropriate faculty in Communication Sciences and Disorders, and their recommendations will be attached to the Plan of Study. Transferred credits may not be used to satisfy an entire area.
10. The last 45 credits (exclusive of dissertation) must be completed at the University of Cincinnati.
11. A maximum of 45 dissertation credits may be included.
