BS in Dietetics

About the Program

Dietetics is a profession firmly based in the biological and behavioral sciences.  Majors in this area will develop competency in translating the science of nutrition into practical and appropriate dietary recommendations for individuals and groups of all ages and states of health.  The curriculum provides a foundation in nutrition, food science, medical nutrition therapy, counseling, health promotion and wellness.

The Dietetics major meets the academic requirements set forth by the Commission on the Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association for eligibility to participate in a post-baccalaureate dietetic internship and ultimately become a registered dietitian (RD).

Students in the Dietetics major can choose one of two options if they are interested in becoming a RD:  (1) They can complete the 4-year traditional Dietetics major and then apply for a post-graduate dietetic internship; (2) They can apply for admission to the Coordinated Program in Dietetics (CP). If accepted, they complete one additional year of coursework, followed by four quarters of supervised practice experience (equivalent to an internship).

Upon completion of the BS Dietetics degree requirements and an accredited dietetic internship or the BS Coordinated Program in Dietetics, the student is required to pass the national registration exam to become a RD.

The courses necessary to complete the requirements to become a RD are referred to as the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD).  The DPD at UC is currently granted initial accreditation by CADE.

CADE is located at the American Dietetic Association, 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606-6995, 312/899-0040 ext. 5400.
