Admissions Requirements

You can go into genetic counseling with an undergraduate degree in any field, although you'll have a competitive edge if you have a strong background in biology. You can also prepare yourself by working or volunteering in a counseling/helping environment and by shadowing and/or interning with a genetic counselor.

To complete your application, you will need the following items:

  • A personal statement of current academic and career goals (see guidelines in the GC program application form)
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Transcripts from all the institutions you attended
  • The UC graduate school application and fee ($40)
  • The genetic counseling program application
  • Graduate Record Exam (GRE), scores on the general exam
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for applicants whose native language is not English.

Apply by February 1 of the calendar year in which you wish to begin the program. If you are selected, we will encourage you to interview with us in March. We will inform you of your admissions status at the end of April.
